I was super excited when local Ottawa knitting artist Greta Grip (check out her Winterlude Urban Cozy Artist profile) invited me to assist her with her “knitting big” installation at a group show at Blink Gallery last month. The show was called “Pop Shop” and was poking fun at the National Gallery of Canada across the street and their summer blockbuster Pop Life.

Greta had created 14 ft knitting needles measuring 94 mm in diameter. She used long cardboard tubes and papier-maché that had been sanded down and then  painted grey. For yarn, she ripped up large pieces of fabric and wrapped it into a ball.

A couple weeks before the show, we sat down with a needle each and whipped up a swatch of 10 stitches acrows and 10 rows down.

She added her name to the ends of the needles:

This was our finished swatch before the show:

Compare to the Guinness Book of World Records holder for largest knitting needles: Julia Hopson of Knit Wits, Penzance, Cornwall.

Julia knitted a tension square of ten stitches and ten rows in stocking stitch using knitting needles that were 6.5cm in diameter and 3.5 meters long. These were ten times the size of a standard 6.5mm and 35cm long knitting needle. The yarn was rope of 12mm in diameter. Does that mean Greta’s were a wee bit taller?

So what exactly do Tracy Morgan and I have in common?

Shots of the two page spread

When one of the editors contacted me last winter to write up a tutorial on how to make your own DIY kite for the spring issue (based on this blog post),  it was an immediate yes of course!  BUST is such a great magazine, and was one of the very first generous sponsors of a Spins & Needles event (our first-year anniversary four years ago!)

Thank you to BUST for featuring my work and for letting me tell my mom and dad, yes I’m officially published :-)

BTW, Jimmy Fallon had Tracy Morgan on as a guest last week – watch the clip below to see them talk about his cover story:

It seems like everyone is looking for a piece of escapism these days. Perhaps that’s why the idea of outer space is frequently popping up! We’re seeing integalactic planetary everywhere!

From last month’s Spins & Needles Outer Space installment that featured DJ beats + DIY projects that were outta this world:

We are superexcited because the original pop culture DIY-er is apparently heading to the big screen! That’s right, MacGyver will soon be in a movie theatre near you.

macgyver

You know you’re a part of pop culture when a dictionary makes your name a verb (think: to Google). Merriam-Webster added “MacGyverize,” a verb meaning “to practically apply scientific or engineering knowledge in the inventive use of common items,” and “MacGyverism,” a noun meaning “any act or invention characterized by a creative use of objects at hand.”

We can’t wait to see how this movie turns out!

Try out this really easy and fun tutorial: make your own album cover!

Here’s what I came up with:
album_cover

album_cover_2

Warning: this can get addictive! I stumbled upon this in the Guardian, but it seems it’s also circulating on Facebook.

Here are the steps:

Get a band name!
Simply use the title of a randomly-generated Wikipedia article.

Get an album title!
Use the last four or five words from the last quote on a page of random quotations.

Get some album art!
Use the image thrown up using this Flickr tool, which generates random images without copyright restrictions.

Make it look nice!
Using Photoshop, Paint, or whatever graphics software you have, fiddle your band logo and album title into some kind of visually-pleasing assemblage.

So it’s Oscar night as I write this, while watching Hugh Jackman and Beyoncé perform (can you believe how talented Hugh is? I didn’t know he could sing and dance so well!)

Here’s some links to DIY spraypaint home decor tutorials and inspiring pieces by Ryan McElhinney, inspired by stumbling across the DIY Oscar statue using a Ken doll.
