The Spins & Needles Best in Show Party is coming up in a couple weeks, and here’s a peek at the inspiration for the event:

Jeff Koon's Rabbit

Jeff Koons’ iconic steel rabbit, currently on display at the National Gallery of Canada as part of their exhibition Pop Life, was what started it all. If you’re in Canada’s capital, be sure to check it out. The exhibition, including lots of silkscreened works, runs until September 19th. The shot above is at Nuit Blanche 2009 in Toronto of an actual balloon model of the steel rabbit (via Justin Good‘s Flickr page).

This plush balloon dog from My Paper Crane was too cute!  We totally love this idea.

Horse ribbon prize installation by Hayley Carmo – loving all the colours and shapes (via Decor8).

Napolean Dynamite‘s awesome liger caricatures = mix + match creatures.

Best in Show by Christopher Guest, the mockumentary about competing in a dog show.

spins & needles - june 2007

Past work by a Spins & Needler a few years back. He won best in show for his own “Best in Show” diorama featuring dogs such as Misty, Lady, Felicity, Destiny, Barbie and Frenchy.

And last but not least 99 Luftballoons (99 Red Balloons) by Nena – classic 80s!

Spins & Needles September 2010 - Best in Show

Spins & Needles has been on a wee break this summer from our regular events (we’ve busy programming DIY goodness for this upcoming year.) This month we are back in full force!

The Pop Life exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada is coming to a close, but we’re extending all that is pop with our party this month. Inspired by Jeff Koons’ stainless steel rabbit on display, we’re featuring Best in Show (our rescheduled July event).

Think plush balloon animals, mythical liger-esque creatures and first-place prize ribbons! Listen to funky beats by DJs Jason Pelletier + Meterman. Plus a portion of the cover will be donated to the Ottawa Humane Society.

When: Friday September 24 @ 8:00p.m. onwards
Where: Legion Hall (330 Kent St. @ Somerset St. W.) (Buses #1, 4, 7, 12)
Cover: $8 – includes access to all materials and instructions.

Info: http://www.spinsandneedles.com/upcomingevent.htm

Read about our inspiration for this month’s theme in an upcoming post.

Plus if you’re looking for more Pop Life inspiration, check out Spins & Needles Silkscreening 101 Workshops and create your own pop art. Fall dates scheduled for Sunday September 26, Sunday October 24 and Sunday November 28.

See you in September!
