Inspired by those Keep Calm and Carry on posters that are popping up in so many house tours, I thought it would be neat to do a varation using some of the Spins & Needles slogans. Particularly since the theme of the Spins & Needles July 2009 installment will be mixing crowns, croquet, DIY and DJs (think British royalty meets Alice in Wonderland). I’m going to print a couple of these up and hang them in our new apartment.
To make these two posters, I used Photoshop to create a white block image of the Spins & Needles logo, and used the Gill Sans font for the slogans (not the exact same font used in the original poster but pretty close). Then selected royalty-theme colours (royal blue and purple) for the background.
The story behind the resurgence of the poster is really interesting: the fact that a once obscure WWII poster from the late 1930s/early 1940s found at the bottom of a box in Northern England is now found in houses all over North American and Europe. And that it has inspired a whole new legion of posters, including the Get Excited and Make Things poster – a more active, DIY response to the older poster? and the Keep Calm and Rock On poster.
More info will be posted about the July 2009 Spins & Needles event in Ottawa within the next week! Stay tuned.
